From “The Boss’s Daughter” to Leading Blue Haven Pools: My Journey in Construction
What an incredible honour.
I’m Remonda Martinez, and my journey with Blue Haven Pools began long before I ever imagined I would one day help lead the business.
My parents started Blue Haven Pools in 1973. But for many years, I wasn’t known as a business owner or a leader.
I was simply “the boss’s daughter.”
If you’ve ever worked in a family business, you’ll know that title doesn’t necessarily make things easier.
Being the youngest child — and the daughter — brought its own set of challenges. But looking back, those early experiences helped shape the way I approach leadership, people and business today.
My Real Education Started in the Car With Dad
My journey into the business began in 1993, when I was just 14 years old.
Every morning, I would ride to work with Dad.
At the time, they were simply conversations between a father and his daughter. Looking back now, those car trips became one of the best apprenticeships I could ever have asked for.
We talked about customers.
We talked about construction.
We talked about business, people and life.
I learned that building a successful company was about far more than building swimming pools. It was about understanding people, keeping your word, solving problems and taking responsibility when things became difficult.
Those conversations stayed with me.
And, over time, they helped shape the leader I would become.
Stepping Into Leadership
By 2001, I had stepped into a leadership role at Mutual Pools.
Over the following decade, I helped guide its merger with Blue Haven Pools and other businesses.
It was a period of significant change, growth and learning.
Then, in 2011, my parents retired.
That was a defining moment.
I invested in Blue Haven Pools with a clear vision for what I believed the business could become.
But achieving that vision would require some major changes.
Bringing Blue Haven Back Under One Roof
Between 2013 and 2019, one of my biggest goals was to bring every Blue Haven franchise back under one roof.
That meant creating:
- One licence
- One management team
- One standard for quality
- One approach to customer service
- One reputation we could all stand behind
It was one of the biggest challenges of my career.
And during that same period, I was also raising three young boys.
There were plenty of long days, difficult decisions and moments when the responsibility felt enormous.
But I believed strongly in what Blue Haven could become if we operated as one unified business.
Today, Blue Haven Pools operates across NSW under one business, and I’m incredibly proud of what our team has built together.
No Business Is Built by One Person
Recognition like this may have my name attached to it, but the journey has never been mine alone.
It belongs to every customer who has trusted Blue Haven Pools with their home.
It belongs to every employee who has worn the Blue Haven logo with pride.
It belongs to every supplier who has supported us.
And it belongs to every trade and craftsman who turns up before sunrise and puts in the work required to build something exceptional.
Swimming pool construction is a team effort.
Every completed project represents countless conversations, decisions, challenges, skills and people working together.
That is something I never take for granted.
What Construction Has Given Me
Construction has given me a career I genuinely love.
It has given me lifelong friendships.
It has challenged me professionally and personally.
And it has given me the privilege of helping thousands of Australian families create spaces where they can spend time together for years to come.
When you work in this industry long enough, you realise you aren’t only building structures.
You are creating places where birthdays will be celebrated, children will learn to swim, friends will gather and families will make memories.
Being part of that is incredibly rewarding.
To the Next Generation of Women in Construction
To every young woman considering a career in construction, I want you to know something:
There is absolutely a place for you here.
You may enter rooms where very few people look like you.
You may be underestimated.
You may have to prove yourself more than once.
Keep going.
Lead with confidence.
Stay curious.
Work hard.
Back yourself.
There are so many different paths within construction — from design and project management to operations, customer experience, trades, leadership and business ownership.
The industry needs more women.
It needs more leaders.
And it needs more people who are willing to build something meaningful.
Building What Comes Next
I started this journey as a 14-year-old riding to work with her dad.
I could never have imagined where those mornings would eventually lead.
Today, when I look at Blue Haven Pools, I see more than the company my parents started in 1973.
I see the people who have helped build it.
I see the families who have trusted us.
I see the lessons passed from one generation to another.
And I see an enormous amount of opportunity still ahead.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey.
Here’s to building what’s next. 💙
