Here’s the calculation our technical team uses for every pool: 

A medium lap pool measuring 10m × 2.5m × 1.5m holds 37,500 litres of water. The Australian standard requires your entire pool volume to cycle through filtration every 8 hours. That’s 4,688 litres per hour or 78 litres per minute. 

Choosing a filter rated below the required flow rate means constantly battling water quality issues. Selecting one significantly larger creates excessive suction and wastes electricity.

How Sand Filters Work

“Why does my pressure gauge keep climbing?” That’s the most common question from new sand filter owners.

Inside a sand filter sits a bed of specially graded silica or glass media. Pool water enters the top, pushes through this dense sand layer, and leaves dirt behind. Water struggles to pass through as the sand traps more debris – hence the rising pressure gauge. At a certain point (usually 8-10 psi above starting pressure), the valve switches to a “backwash” position, reversing the flow and flushing trapped dirt to waste.

Sand filtration technology hasn’t changed significantly in decades, but today’s glass media upgrades capture particles half the size of traditional sand – down to 20 microns versus the older 40-50 micron standard.

Why Sand Filters Remain Popular for Concrete Pools

Sand filters continue to outsell cartridge models for concrete pools for several key reasons:  

  •       Lower initial purchase cost
  •       Excellent durability in harsh Australian sunlight
  •       Perfect fit under decking where vertical space is limited
  •       Ability to process heavy debris loads from eucalyptus trees and coastal winds

 The trade-offs include water wastage during backwashing, less efficient filtration compared to cartridge systems, and the need for dedicated waste plumbing. Frequent backwashing can also disrupt water chemistry.

For most of our concrete pool installation, we recommend sand filters when clients prioritise ease of maintenance and have sufficient water availability, particularly for pools over 60,000 litres.

What Makes Cartridge Filters Different

Over the years, the Blue Haven team has converted many sand filter owners to cartridge systems, with very few switching back. The reason? The pleated polyester fabric in a cartridge filter offers substantially more surface area than a sand bed of the same size.

This extensive filtration area traps particles down to 10-15 microns – roughly half the size that even glass media sand filters can catch. Compared to sand filters, cartridge systems never need backwashing; instead, the element is removed periodically during swim season and cleaned with a garden hose.

The newest cartridge materials incorporate antimicrobial coatings that actively fight bacteria and algae between cleanings. While these don’t replace proper sanitiser levels, they help maintain water clarity during heavy use periods.

Energy efficiency improves, too, as cartridge systems operate at a lower pressure than sand filters, requiring less pump effort.
